At least 70% of the calls I make on a given day go to voicemail or go unanswered. Granted most of the time people maybe at work, but what really gets me are the debtors that refuse to pick-up the phone when they are at home. It is impossible for someone to call everyday for a month and not get you at home at least once. It’s a common tactic of avoidance and one that will only embolden a collector.
What is it that people fear?
- Facing the situation
- Being held responsible
- Being inconvenienced
Certainly, every call is a different situation. So many of them say there is “Nothing I can do” which becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s important to remember there is ALWAYS something you can do and until you do it will never go away. The whole collection process is not supposed to be easy on the debtor. Only you know if you are doing all you can.
The TRUTH is communication is the key to solving your debt woes. Just like anything else if you choose to ignore it you may feel better today. You can play games like: pickup/hang-up, you have the wrong number or my favorite, “This customer is not receiving calls at this time.” Remember you’re only fooling yourself and in the end the bank will win.
