What do you think keeps people going to work, day after day, even when they hate their jobs? For those lucky people in the world that actually like what they do for 8 hours a day, God bless you. However, the vast majority of people go to work strictly out of fear of becoming poor. What about when you retire? I’m sure the people who recently saw their retirement cut in half by this latest recession are even more concerned for their future. Here is an article explaining how 7 out 10 people fear retirement poverty.
What is poverty?
- By Webster’s definition, poverty is the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions.
- A better definition, provided by Worldbank describes poverty as hunger. Poverty is lack of shelter. Poverty is being sick and not being able to see a doctor. Poverty is not having access to schools and not knowing how to read. Poverty is not having a job, fear for the future, living one day at a time. Poverty is losing a child to illness brought about by unclean water. Poverty is powerlessness, lack of representation and freedom.
Why is poverty so feared?
- My opinion is this, deep down everyone wants to be independent in and of themselves. The sheer mental anguish of not being able to fulfill your role as a man and a provider, or a mother who can’t provide for her children is a tough pill to swallow. The social ramifications of being a labeled a failure, deadbeat, loser or stereotyped as ‘white trash’ or ‘ghetto’ is nerve-racking alone.
- It’s a fact, a person is always valuable if they have money, no matter what they do (i.e Alex Rodriguez, Martha Stewart, Bill Clinton, or Bill O’Reilly etc….). No matter how bad their lies or hypocrisy they are somehow are still valued by society. Go figure!
Ridding yourself of the fear of poverty is as simple as controlling your thoughts and actions. As you go to sleep every night, say to yourself, “I have done all I can.” Poverty will never be a issue in your life. If you’re in poverty now, don’t look back and dwell, do all that you can today and your situation will improve immediately.
